Our Santa Barbara Moving Company Makes Moves Less Scary

Dear Friends,

Since 1918, Hazelwood Moving and Storage has been helping customers in the Santa Barbara area. Yes, you read that right, we are quickly approaching our 100th anniversary of moving and storing the possessions of Santa Barbara families and businesses.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows 314,992 families moved between 2015 and 2016. Forty-two percent of those moving said it was for a change in housing and of that group, forty percent moved within 50 miles. The peak season for moving falls between the months of June and October and scheduling your move early is important.

Moving can take you across town, across the country, or even across the globe. During this time, your houses can be left unoccupied. This puts it at risk of being the easy prey of thieves. Santa Barbara is a quiet community with a low crime rate, but break-ins can and do happen.

As you know, a property is less likely to be broken into if it looks occupied. These tips will help keep your home or business secure when you can’t be around to protect it.

Consider the following to ensure a safer move this year:

  1. Call your home insurance company.  Your insurance needs will be different before, during and after moving. You may need to change your coverage but be sure to keep your property insured. Contact a company like Hometown Insurance Services, who offer a free review of your insurance requirements and will give you a free quote.

  2. Keep your security system active. There are many products like doorbells and flood lights that include video of your property. These products allow you to have remote access to your home’s security system. A continued phone or cable connection may be required for these devices to work properly.

  3. Inform local law enforcement that your home will be vacant. They will need your new contact information so they can get in touch with you if necessary.

  4. Check exterior lighting for workability and replace burned out bulbs. Motion sensing exterior lights are available at most home improvement stores. These lights come on when movement is sensed on your property.

  5. Install timers on a lamp or two in the house. Set these up to turn on and off at the times of day a family would normally be using the rooms.

  6. Hire a property management service that provides 24-hour emergency and on call services, like A-Best Property Management.  A property manager can help you keep the yard, landscaping, and pool maintained.

  7. Park a car in the driveway.  You might consider to allow a neighbor to park one of their cars in your driveway.

  8. Regularly check air conditioning and run water through the toilets or sinks.

  9. Cover entryways. If your property will be vacant for an extended period without utilities, cover entryways and first floor windows with plywood.

  10. Empty your property of valuables. Place valuables, excess possessions or furniture into a storage unit for safekeeping. Hazelwood Moving and Storage offers five sizes of self-storage units and can help you determine the best size for you.
