FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 29, 2015, Santa Barbara CA: Summer should be a time for children to enjoy playtime with friends, a week at camp, a family vacation, or time at the pool. But for many children who receive free and reduced-priced meals at school, summer can mean hunger. Hazelwood Allied, a Santa Barbara moving and storage company, announces that it is supporting the End Summer Hunger campaign to help provide meals for these children during the summer.
Sponsored by the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, the End Summer Hunger campaign runs through the month of June. The goal is to raise $50,000 to support its Picnic in the Park summer food program. Launched locally in 2011, Picnic in the Park is part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program. The Foodbank plans to offer free, nutritious meals, activities and enrichment opportunities to ensure that summer is fun for all kids in Santa Barbara County. Healthy summer meals will be served at various locations countywide, Monday through Friday, for ten weeks. Foodbank volunteers will also lead activities, games and physical education enrichment lessons. There is no sign-up or registration process, but meals are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Any child 18 and under is welcome to come and receive a free, delicious lunch every weekday this summer. This year the Foodbank hopes to be able to distribute 38,000 nutritious meals to children ages 1-18 at its various locations.
Community volunteers and groups also help manage and support individual park sites by handing out lunches and organizing food literacy training and summer games.
“As a moving company in Santa Barbara, we have always been strong supporters of the industry’s Move for Hunger campaign,” commented John McCann, owner of Hazelwood Allied. “That is a hunger relief organization which works with relocation companies to collect non-perishable food items, and deliver it to food banks all across North America. What’s great about this program, though, is that it hits home for children right here in Santa Barbara County. We’re thrilled to be able to support such a worthwhile cause.”
